After narrowing his list of suitors to a lucky seven, Monday marked decision day for Team Trae Young standout Shawn Jones and after much thought, the Shadow Creek, Texas product has decided to remain in his home state and committed to Texas State University.

“I picked Texas State because coach is a real one,” Shawn told Jacob Polacheck of ZagsBlog, referring to TSU head coach Terrence Johnson. “He doesn’t tell you what you want to hear. He tells you exactly how it is without sugarcoating anything.”

Other suitors included another pair of Texas institutions: North Texas and Texas A&M, as well New Mexico, McNeese State, UNLV, and Indiana State.

Texas State finished the 2020-21 season with a record of 18-7, including 12-3 in the Sun Belt Conference to win the regular season conference title for the first time in program history,, but lost in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament to end their season. However Johnson, who had been serving as interim coach last season, was elevated to head coach at the conclusion of the season and appears to be building something special that Shawn is excited to be a part of.

“What stood out the most was how detailed and smart coach Johnson is and how he treats his staff and players,” Shawn told ZagsBlog. “He treats his staff and players with love and care, but he’s not going to let you off the hook easily with anything because he wants everyone to succeed.”
