Alex had offers on the table from Alabama, Texas Tech, Oral Roberts, North Texas, Tulsa and Utah State. However, he decided on SMU, keeping the McKinney High School product in the Dallas area.
“At first when I started this recruiting process, I wanted to get away from home,” Alex told Brandon Jenkins of 247 Sports. “Seeing that SMU is closer, it kind of intrigued me. The atmosphere really separated the program from the rest. They have nice facilities, everything is close together, and the staff consists of really good people. I am looking forward to getting to know them better and continuing my journey with them.”
Alex also pointed to two other big factors that helped make his decision: his academic future, and his relationship with the SMU coaching staff.
“Academically, SMU is one of the top institutions for business,” he told 247 Sports. “I feel I can gain something from that aspect of things. As far as basketball, I am going to go there and give my all. That is what the coaching staff expects from me and they are not going to get anything less….”The coaching staff showed a lot of support and that stuff could not go unnoticed,” says Anamekwe. “Mainly [SMU Assistant Coach] Yaphett King did a great job of getting to know me as a person. He was telling me his vision for me and I liked it.”
Told y’all SMU was getting a hometown hero. They got their GUY. @CoachYKing doing some heavy lifting on this one https://t.co/52rbrEndzl
